Get to know the person behind the paint
I am a Hungarian and Romanian artist, and I live in the heart of Transylvania, in Cluj-Napoca.
I’m a proud bookworm (my favorite series are the Outlander books and The Seven Sisters books), I love to see and get to know other cultures (yes, I love to travel), and I make unbelievably good brownies. (For the recipe, follow me on Instagram, and feel free to drop me a message there!)
I finished my BSc in Environmental Science at Sapientia University in Cluj-Napoca, and later completed my MSc in Sustainable Biotechnology at Sapientia University in Miercurea-Ciuc.
Art was never my original plan - I imagined myself as a researcher, teacher, or lab worker, but I guess it wasn't meant to be for me.
Along the journey, I also completed a few UX design courses because I hoped to work as a UX designer and build meaningful webpages. Even though things didn’t work out as planned, I’m grateful for the experience. It taught me a lot across different fields, deepened my understanding of creativity, and gave me insight into what people truly need.
I’ve always loved art. I drew on anything I could get my hands on - notebooks, exam papers, napkins, even on my desk -
and I especially loved making portraits (even when they weren’t exactly masterpieces).
I started painting in 2019 as a form of therapy, and in 2020 I did my first #oiltober challenge. After a few ups and downs, pauses and restarts, by 2025 I decided to take painting more seriously, and make it my full time job, make it my profession.
After getting married I changed my legal name to Deák Hilda, but I chose to keep my maiden name 'Varga' as my artist name. My artistic journey goes back to childhood - my father bought me my first painting set, which waited about seven years before I actually used it. My parents have always been my biggest supporters (right next to my husband, of course).
Keeping my maiden name felt like a tribute to them, to my childhood, and especially to my father. And that’s how the Hilda Varga Art was born.
My goal is to bring colour into people’s homes and daily lives, and to create art that lets you see the world the way I see it. I want art to feel accessible to everyone - that’s why I don’t limit myself to just oil paints. I use any medium my skills and curiosity allow.
I paint on textiles (like tote bags and graduation caps), on ceramics (mugs, cups, glass ornaments), on wood (boxes, spoons), and I also love creating children’s illustrations, as you can see in my pregnancy milestone cards and baby milestone cards.
If you want to check out what else I painted along the way, take a look at the Gift Ideas menu.
This is how I add art to the ordinary moments of everyday life, and to let those everyday moments inspire my art.
Thank you for being here and for making my journey better.
